How to Make Magic Mushroom Gummies
Share
Mushrooms are a powerhouse of health benefits, offering everything from enhanced cardiovascular health and immunity to potentially increasing longevity. They’ve been used for centuries for their medicinal properties, and now, thanks to innovation, we have an easy way to incorporate them into our diets: mushroom gummies. These tasty, convenient edibles are a great way to enjoy the benefits of mushrooms—whether you’re using functional varieties or psychedelic strains.
In this article, we’ll show you how to make your own mushroom gummies at home.
What Are Mushroom Gummies?
Mushroom gummies are a delicious and practical way to consume mushrooms. These edibles can be made with any dried or powdered mushroom, from the functional (like Lion’s Mane, Chaga, and Reishi) to the psychedelic (like Psilocybin). The best part? You get all the benefits of mushrooms without having to swallow capsules or drink bitter mushroom teas.
Does Heat Affect Mushroom Potency?
While there’s some debate over whether high heat can diminish the potency of mushrooms, particularly psychedelic varieties, we know that mushrooms have been brewed into teas for centuries. Some studies suggest that hot water extracts more of the beneficial compounds. To play it safe and preserve all those great properties, we recommend using low heat when preparing your mushroom extract.
Making Mushroom Extract with the MagicalButter Machine
The first step in making mushroom gummies is creating your mushroom infusion. This can be done in a variety of ways, but the MagicalButter Machine is one of the best tools to extract the essence of mushrooms. Here’s how you can do it:
Ingredients:
- 2–3 tablespoons dried mushrooms or mushroom powder of your choice*
- At least 2 cups of water
- Optional: 1–2 tablespoons alcohol (75% ABV or higher) to extend the shelf life of your extract
Directions:
- Add your mushrooms and water (plus alcohol, if using) into the MagicalButter Machine.
- Set the temperature to 130°F and press the 1 HOUR button.
- Once the cycle completes, strain your extract to remove the mushroom pulp.
- Your mushroom infusion is now ready to use in your gummies!
Note: If you’re making mushroom tea and prefer a longer steep, simply add more water to compensate for evaporation during the extra time.
Making Your Mushroom Gummies
Now that you have your mushroom extract, it’s time to turn it into gummies! Here’s the step-by-step recipe for magical mushroom gummies.
Ingredients:
- 1 bag of Magical Gummy Mix (or 6 ounces of flavored gelatin + 2 envelopes (½ ounce each) of unflavored gelatin)
- 7 fluid ounces of mushroom extract, cold
Tools:
- Silicone mold (for shaping the gummies)
- Non-stick spatula
- Double boiler setup
Directions:
- Pour your mushroom extract into a large glass bowl.
- Sprinkle your gummy mix (or gelatin) over the liquid and gently fold it in using a silicone spatula. Continue folding until the powder is fully absorbed.
- Let the bowl rest for 10 minutes—this allows the gelatin to "bloom."
- Once bloomed, place the bowl over a double boiler setup. Gently stir with the spatula as the mixture melts, which should take about 1–3 minutes.
- Once fully melted, add your mushroom extract and gently mix to combine.
- Carefully pour the mixture into your silicone gummy molds using a measuring
cup. - Let the gummies set at room temperature for about 1 hour, or refrigerate for 30 minutes to speed up the process.
- Once the gummies are firm, pop them out of the molds and enjoy!
Pro Tip: If you’re in a hurry or don’t have time for an extraction, you can simply add ground mushrooms to the mixture after the gelatin blooms and before melting.
Storing Your Gummies
Store your mushroom gummies in the refrigerator to keep them fresh. They’ll last for about a week, but if you used alcohol in your infusion, they should stay good for up to a month.
Bonus: No Time for Extracting?
If you're short on time, you can skip the extraction step entirely. Simply add ground dried mushrooms directly to the gummy mix after blooming and proceed with the rest of the recipe. This method might not extract as much of the active compounds, but it’s a quicker way to enjoy your mushroom gummies.
With these simple steps, you can make your own magical mushroom gummies at home and enjoy all the amazing benefits of mushrooms in a convenient and tasty form. If you want more mushroom inspiration, check out the MagicalButter blog for more recipes, tips, and tricks
